to convert to 9 speed you would also need new shifters, a whole new cassette, and a new chain. not at all economical.
If you want 9 speed, you need 9 speed shifters and cassette and new cassette body, along with a chain to match. Your budget for all this will be much more than $60. Unless you are willing to spend much more, you can’t convert to 9 speed. labour charges alone would exceed your budget.
The rear shifter, at Jensonusa.com: $33. The rear cassette, at Jensonusa.com: $24. 9 speed chain (.9mm thinner) : $20. You just need a 9 speed freewheel so the cassette will fit. It’s easier to stick with 7 speed until things start breaking.
The deraileur will work with your current setup, I run them all the time. 9 speed parts are compatible the 7/8 speed chain, except for the cassette. Even a 9 speed rear derailleur will work with your chain. Put them on and see how they work.
