I go mountain biking a lot and I need to purchase a helmet. I don’t know much about bike helmets so any information would be useful. I’m an adult male!
Thanks!

Good Helmet – Extreme Light weight, proved structure.
Low End Helmet – Heavy, Structure is not tested, inferior material use.
Although u might not feel much of a difference in weight while u compare at the shop but it will weight u down if you travel a long distance. and while the good ones has the minimum wind resistance.
Giro and Bell both make helmets with chinguards, which they sell for BMX bicycling but can also be used for downhill mountain biking.
If you don’t like chinguards or facemasks, you might consider a Pro-Tec – type multisport helmet.. Those are the skateboard-type helmets also used by mountaineers and military commandos for rappelling down cliffs or out of helicopters: http://www.news.navy.mil/management/photodb/webphoto/web_030524-N-4441P-091.jpg
I’d recommend just heading down to ur local bike shop(s) and try on as many as you can; every head is shaped differently. I doubt they would carry a helmet that didnt pass safety requirements as any one by the major manufacturers will be.
I’d be looking at ones in the $40-60 range to start with. Lower end ones (think $20-30 at the supermart) are going to be hotter and the insides will probably fall apart a lot sooner. Higher end ones you are paying for lighter weight and possibly better venting, which if you ride in the heat might be something to consider. You’re not getting more safety out of the higher end ones.
I really like my gyro hex – got last year’s on clearance for $50ish i think. It has a bit lower coverage on the back and sides and is vented well. http://www.bestwebbuys.com/bikes/search?q=giro+hex&isrc=i-srch-search
And dont forget to replace it if you knock your head hard on something (some manufacturers will replace it for free)
Giro and Specialized make a lot of different and cool styles
