Even for use with toe clips, shoes have to have stiff soles so that the pedal does not dig into the sole of the shoe and hurt your foot. A shoe with a stiff sole is not any good as a trainer. Any spd style compatible shoe that has a smooth sole will work fine with toe clips. As with any type of shoe, you should try them on to find a good fit, try looking around local shops. This is a good time of year to shop, many stores will have sales and you can find good deals
