I just bought a road bike and it came with pedals and cleats. The cleats use 2 screws side by side to mount to shoes. I was told these would work with any “bike” shoes. So I bought some road biking shoes only to find out that the shoes have 3 screw holes speard out in triangle shape. If I try to attach cleats only 1 of the screws would fit.
So my questions are,
Are there road biking shoes with the 2 side by side screws, or is this only available in mountain bike shoes?
Will it work to just use the 1 screw in the middle screw hole, or would that mess up my pedal stroke?
my cleats look like ones here

You can either find some cool looking MTB shoes or replace pedals, cleats and shoes for a three bolt road shoe system.
Or find a shoe with five bolt holes, suitable for both.
I hope this helps.
.
There are many systems for pedals and cleats. The two leaders and Look and Shimano SPD. You need shoes that work with the Shimano SPD system cleats. The shoes that you have work with the Look system.
For more info, you can check this online manual on the Shimano web site: http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/SI/Pedals/PD6600_5500/SI-43Y0A_v1_m56577569830611921.pdf
