You should first and foremost focus on the fit of the shoe first. Once you find a manufacturer (or manufacturers) that produce a shoe that agrees with your feet, look through their line to see which model combines the features you’re looking for with the price that you can live with.
You get what you pay for is generally the rule of thumb here. More money gets you more features, lighter weight, and so on.
The Sidi Dominators are great shoes. They’re pricey, but worth it. Having a buckle is key. When your shoes get muddy, the velcro will fail. I own a pair and love them.
However, there are tons of manufacturers out there. Go out, try a lot of pairs on for size, and then decide.
Good luck!
I just bought the Shimano SH-MA80. They were only $75 and they feel great. Best bang for the buck IMHO.
I am not worried about the velcro failing in the mud. I don’t take my shoes off on the trail and pack the velcro with mud! If the velcro is shut, it won’t get mud in it.
