Is there anything special I should carry in my bag?
Any advice in particular regarding clothing? I have no specialized clothing and the local shop is closed so it’s a no go.
Got a helmet that I used to use for quads so i’m sure it’ll suffice for bike riding.

I like to carry a water bottle.
as far as the first time is concerned….just do it. the more time you waste thinking about other crap the more fun youll take out of the experiance
Tools, a first aid kit, and a snack/water.
Gotta be ready to fix a flat, so you’ll need a patch kit and pump, and maybe a spare tube if you’re going to be out all day. Full-finger gloves and some water and food and you should be set. Start out slow to get your muscles warmed up and then just tear into it.
to carry in your bag? Spare tube, tire lever & pump.
If you have say.. Underarmor, it will help wick the sweat.
So go out, have fun, hit up the easy trails first. Don’t be discouraged if you crash/fall.
The old staying goes: If you ain’t crashing, you ain’t riding hard enough.
In the bag: Extra Tube, Patch kit, basic bike tool.
Clothing: Doesn’t really matter if you’re just getting into biking, shorts, t-shirt, dress for the weather, if you have a light rail jacket, could carry that in the bag just in case.
Not sure what that helmet is you have, but any helmet is better than nothing:)
I can tell you that having actual mountain bike shorts makes a big difference in comfort, they have padding in the crotch area, which is NICE, lol. If you get serious into biking, just biking a lot in general, you should get a bike helmet first, you’ll want to go to a shop to get a good fitting one, makes a big difference. Next thing to get would be some bike shorts, I got the Fox Ranger shorts:http://shop.foxracing.com/ecomm/AutoForward.do?forward=home.pagedef#aforward=asyn&proId=24767&cid=147&cname=Shorts&proNumber=26102&imgName=26102099F.jpg
Hope that link works.. They’re expensive yes, but my god, it makes a big difference!
Final word of advice: Just be careful, don’t ride over terrain if you’re not sure of your abilities, or carefully look at it and plan your line over it(your line is basically where you’r wheels go over an obstacle). Don’t push yourself harder than you’re comfortable. Do this and you’ll get better without crashing.
And wow don’t listen to stuff like this:
“The old staying goes: If you ain’t crashing, you ain’t riding hard enough.”
If you ain’t crashing it means that you’re smart and don’t try things you can’t do, or it means that you’re just good and don’t crash. I knew someone who just went nutz with trying stuff mountain biking, he ended up in the hospital with several broken bones… I’ve also seen people do some pretty crazy stuff and be perfectly fine, the difference is one person doesn’t know their abilities, the other one does. So if you want to break bones and get a concussion and break your bike, ride harder. Otherwise, be careful and you’ll get better with time and practice, and know your abilities, don’t try anything you’re not sure of.
