In my mountain bike the gears go from 1-6. Can you please explain what each lvl stands for?
And on my left of the bike it has H to L and there are a bunch of white squares between them. What do they do?
Thank You!

fascinating question…but what is it doing in “jokes and riddles” ???
The 1-6 stands for the toothed gears on the rear wheel. The gear closest to the wheel (the biggest one) is 1 (I think) and the smallest one, farthest away from the wheel is 6.
The H (High) and L (Low) do the same thing except with the with the gears for the pedal turner. In this one, the higher gear is the bigger gear.
When you want to go faster/farther with each pedal stroke, you want to switch the gears to higher levels. At higher levels, there is a big difference in diameter between the pedal gear and the wheel gear. This causes you to turn the wheel more for every revolution of the pedals, hence go farther/faster.
When you want to go uphill/pedal easier, you switch to lower gears. This makes the gears on the pedal and the wheel almost the same size. Each pedal revolution will only turn the wheel a bit. You therefore don’t have to do as much work pedaling, but neither would you go very fast.
Hello,
Here is a simple explanation of the gears on a mountain bike. The gears 1-6 are attached to the pedals.
The high to low are attached to the wheel. A chain runs between them. If you have your bike in 1st gear on the pedals and Low on the wheel, that means the small cog at the pedals with have the chain on it and the large cog at the back will have the chain on it. For every gear on the pedal (1-6) that you select the chain will be shifted from 1st to 6th and same at the back. You do not need to worry about that though. All you need to know is this:
1st=very easy(slow or up steep hill)-extremely easy to pedal
2nd=easy(slow or up average hill)-easy to pedal
3rd=moderate(normal riding at moderate speed)-around normal
4th=fast( for riding down small hills or along flat roads at decent speed)-difficult except for when going down hills
5th=very fast(good for riding down any hills at speed or down slopes)difficult to pedal even on some hills.
The other side pretty much are more defined, because only having 5 gears may be a little broad in range of gears you need the others. The others are not nearly as substantial in what they do and the effect they have but none-the-less they are still very important. when in any of the 5 gears you can select any of the others low(L) meaning easy and high(H) meaning difficult. it is similar to this 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 they are like sub gears.
The white squares i would say would probably just mean the different levels in which to choose from.
I hope this answers your question
