i ride a fixed road bike and ive already decided to get spd pedals so i could ride to school and back and stuff with regular shoes, but i dont know what type of shoe i want to get, i want to get road shoes for the stiffness of it, but i like mountain bike shoes because of the recessed cleats so i can walk arround a bit, i usually bike to the beach with my friends and thats about 20 miles and some of us swim but i usually walk arround or bike farther down to the pier, so im really at a crossroads between between moutain and road, any help?
also, is the stiffness between road and moutain shoes that much of a differance?

Mountain bike shoes, you cant walk in school with road shoes!
Pearl Izumi I-beam mountain shoes. They are almost as stiff as my MTB shoes. Also, don’t use SPD’s. Get a set of eggbeaters or speedplays.
sandals work great
It’s very hard to walk in road shoes, the mountain bike shoes are a lot more flexible.
if you are riding just riding around town and not hard core road cycling i would recommend mountain bike cleats. something along the lines of this style http://www.northwave.com/usa/shoes_det.php?itemid=264&catid=2&area=2 they dont have to be as fancy as these though. these have the stiffness of road shoes yet are easier to walk around in. i commuted by bike in portland oregon wearing mountain cleats and never had a problem.
as long as you get cleats and not just shoes with the clip on them there will be no difference in stiffness between mountain and road styles
