I want a mountain bike to replace my 10 year old bike that was stolen. My old bike was a Specialized Rock Hopper hard tail front shock with tons of post factory addons (handlebars, bike computer, clipless pedals, to name a few).
In my budget of $700 for all of the above, I can either buy retail a Giant Rainier W for $650 or a Specialized Myca for $610 (or another Rock Hopper which is not a women’s specific bike for $650). Both are from dealer retailers and not on Craig’s List or used. Then I’d need to buy afterwards the bike bag and the pedals/computer etc.
I still have my helmet and my mountain bike shoes and don’t need those, but I need to make sure the computer, bag, and clipless pedals (if I want them) are in my $700 budget.
I am willing to consider a reputable online seller or Nashbar/Performance and REI but these 2 bikes are the first that I’d seriously consider buying.
I plan to ride on trails and up steep hills and not as much single track terrain but I want that option.

I would buy the cheapest ones that i like.
I mean that would put more moneys in your wallet or something
If you are lookin’ at Performance then look at this one: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=25558&subcategory_ID=3050 it isn’t a ladies bike but that isn’t too important as the difference is negligible anyway with these and you had a mans specific before anyway. This one is in your price range and similar to the Specialized anyway….?
The benefit of you local dealer is support, if you’re not a mechanic. In the same price range, most bikes are similar. Ride them, and 1 will jump out as fitting your body better, shifting smoother, handling better etc. It’s your bike, it should feel better to you.
