What exactly is “Metrosexuality” all about?

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

The idea of the “metrosexual” male seems to have emerged in the last couple of years. As far as I understand it, the stereotype for the metrosexual man is as follows:

1) Wear clothes that make you look androgenous and carry a manbag.
2) Use beauty products (e.g. yoghurt on your face with cucumbers in your eyes, or whatever).
3) Go out to a “trendy” bar on a Saturday night just to “be seen” and feel oh-so-superior to everyone else – like a wannabe celebrity.
4) Go to the gym to try to cultivate a waif-like and emasculated physique.

Ok, now I ride a motorbike and wear mostly black, with black leathers, I have never ever used a beauty product once in my life, I keep my hair buzz-cut. I go rock climbing and mountain biking and I am a lot stronger than most of the gym-boys – I just collect a few more scars each time I fall off :o P

I have no idea why a man would go for the “metrosexual” look. I have not yet met one single woman who finds the “metrosexual” look attractive, but I have met plenty of women who find bikers very attractive!

If you are actually a gay man who feels feminine and likes to look feminine too, then fair enough, I understand that, but why do heterosexual men go for the “metrosexual” thing? I don’t get it. Not at all.

Question to pro cyclists about bicycling apparell…?

Monday, January 10th, 2011

mountain bike gear Question to pro cyclists about bicycling apparell...?
Hey I have a question… Would riding on the road, on a mountain bike, wearing mountain biking shoes, jersey and shorts look rediculous? Haha, its just that, I ride a mountain bike, and I think if I were to wear road cycling clothes, it wouldn’t really look very uniform… And I think riding in mountain biking gear on the road would look rediculous, but I want to know what you guys think. I don’t ride a road bike because any little bump or rock you ride on feels like you just hit a huge speed bump….
Haha… I’d love to get a full carbon road bike… But maybe after I finish college and have a good job…. Those road bikes are way too expensive. =\

How much would it cost to get serious about bicycle touring?

mountain bike gear How much would it cost to get serious about bicycle touring?
I love bicycle rides and travelling. Yet, my bicycle is a typical “toy” K-mart mountain bike from when I was a teen. Now, as a young adult I want to get serious about biking and work towards touring.

How much would it cost to buy a bike? bicycle clothing, good helmet, shoes? Bags and other accessories?

And what would be the total cost? I’m looking for entry level quality products, that is products that are “serious” but not top of the line expensive.

Can I buy everything I need for my first tour for around $1000?

Mountain bikes are a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Not only do you get pleasure of viewing beautiful sceneries, the sport is also a great way to keep your body in top shape. What makes mountain bikes unique from other types of bicycles is the performance they give on off road rides. From tires to frames, mountain bikes are built to withstand tremendous amounts of shock and other physical punishments on rides.

Off road biking existed as early as bicycles were invented. But the history and development of mountain bikes is often credited to a group of bicycle enthusiasts from California in the 70’s who at that time were developing their own versions of the mountain bike. They even held their own races and were responsible for the first ever downhill mountain bike race on Repack Road, in Fairfax, California. The following years lead to the development of the mountain bike and of the sport mountain biking itself. To better chronicle the history of mountain bike and mountain biking, the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame was founded in 1988 with its museum located in Crested Butte Colorado.

Overtime, mountain biking has branched out into different sporting categories. The most popular of which are cross-country and downhill mountain biking. Since mountain bikes are designed for off road riding, the main priority is durability. Mountain bikes are usually made up of sturdy frames and highly durable wheels. Suspension systems has become common on most modern mountain bikes

Mountain biking is considered an extreme sport thus experience and skills are important factors when choosing mountain bike tracks. Also, riders should make sure to wear industry approved protective gears when riding. This includes helmets, body armor and pads, and gloves.

Riding in the mountains or hills or forest might sound really fun for some people. But some other folks who are non-cyclists think that mountain bikers are a nuisance!

This is because the tires of the mountain bikes will indefinitely leave trails. These trails can cause a few problems. Therefore, you will see places which have signs saying indicating open and closed trails.

The rule of thumb is you should only cycle in open trails. These are the public trails that are used by hikers and other people. Closed trails usually lead to a private property that is owned by a person. Generally, mountain bikers who break the rule (by cycling in the closed trails) give bad rep for mountain biking.

It is actually trespassing into private properties. As for the case of cycling in open trails, you should never leave deep tire trails. Some might argue that cyclists help maintain the trail marks on the ground, making it more visible. But the majority of people do not agree with us. They think that mountain bikers are irritating.

For the past years, ignorant mountain bikers are known to litter and leave deep ruts when they corner. This is why the general public tends to despise mountain bikers. Beginners also tend to skid their bikes, leaving even more unnecessary trails.

Another reason people do not like us cyclists in the woods or mountains is that we are perceived as dangerous motorcycles in the woods. They think that cyclists often invade their personal space with little warning. Again, this is a public misconception. Professional and experienced mountain bikers will always let their presence to be known to other people as well as maintaining steady control of their bicycles, giving a steady impression.

A good advice is to slow down whenever people or horse riders pass by. There is even a rule from ‘IMBA’ (International Mountain Bicycling Association) that says bikers should always give in to hikers. This is done by letting them cross their respective paths first because the bicycle rider could always pedal away anytime.

Another important rule is to never scare animals. Other folks might refer this to spooking animals. Some hikers are known to be bring their dogs along. Horse riders will also be present in the trails too. Try not to make sudden or unexpected movements at these animals. You could inadvertently cause them to behave aggressively. The same goes to cattle that are around certain mountain areas. They are known to injure themselves if they are afraid. This could be bad ethic as the cattle might belong to a cattle farmer.

You also do not want to purposely scare animals like wild turkeys, deer and wild bears. Chances are, these animals might attack you. When mountain biking, be sure to bring all necessary equipments. It can be more tedious than a road bike ride. A bicycle helmet is essential and the second most important thing is your repair kit. Thirdly, you would always want to have an extra layer of clothing or jacket. This extra layer can keep you warm. Mountain weathers can change unpredictably and quickly too. You might even get stuck in the jungle and spend a night there.

You are a biking champ – ruler of the vast mountain trails. But your fame will become dull if you don’t understand the various parts of your mean machine. So to become a complete champ it is necessary to enhance your knowledge about different mountain bike parts.

The Basic Parts Of A Mountain Bike

The Frame

The frame of a mountain bike is smaller than that of a road bike. But the angle is very relaxing for the rider so that he can maneuver the bike with skillful agility over different grounds. Mountain bike manufacturers build bikes, which are gender specific. So while you buy a bike be sure to get the right sizing.

The Handlebars

The handlebars of a mountain bike are flat, usually as wide as the rider’s shoulders. However, depending on the rider’s preference it could be narrower or wider. Riser bars are fast becoming popular as it looks attractive and gives the riders a more upright position. You can add bar ends to the handlebars, which will allow more hand positions and give more comfort to the rider.

Bike Crank And Derailleur

A crank is connected to the bottom bracket of the frame with pedals attached to the tip of each crank. Crank has chainrings attached to it. The gear and chainrings are outfitted with derailleurs. The derailleurs, using the shifters that are placed at the handlebars, derail one gear to the other and the chain from one chainring to the other. The finer the quality of the derailleur the more exact the shifting will be.

Shifters

Shifters activate the front and rear derailleurs setting off the motion of the chain from one gear to the other.

Three basic types of shifters are:

1. Thumb Shifter: These are the most basic shifters that are fastened on top of handlebars and are operated by a push and pull of the thumb and the index finger respectively.

2. Rapid Fire Shifters: Rapid-fire shifters are generally fixed at the bottom of the handlebar and are activated by a two push buttons. For newer models a push and pull lever is used.

3. Grip Shifters: A grip shifter acts like a motorcycle throttle. To shift up to a lighter gear you have to turn the grip shift for the rear derailleur inwards. And to shift down to a heavier gear turn the grip shift outward.

Gear

Mountain bikes are meant to stomp on Steep Mountain trails and are usually equipped with outstanding gear ratios. The most popular one is the 36×34, which the mountain biker christens as “granny” gear. With this gear, you can trudge steep hills at a high tempo.

Brakes

Today’s mountain bikes have passed the stage of coaster brakes. Today the “V” brakes or the linear pull-type brakes are regular in mountain bikes. You can have Disk Brakes for high-end mountain bikes. Disk Brakes are highly proficient, as its feat does not get clogged by water or mud. You must keep your timing intact for a good braking performance.

Pedals

The mountain bike riders use two types of pedals. One is the toe clip, which can be made up of metal or plastic and is compatible with any kind of rubber shoe. The second type is the clipless pedal for which the biker has to wear a special kind of shoe. Clipless pedals raise the transfer of power from the rider to the bike.

Saddle

A saddle is necessary for your comfort while you chomp your way through a rugged ride. Make your seat comfortable with a perfect saddle for you.

Wheels and Tires

There are plenty of wheel sets in the market, which will ensure high performance. Mostly these wheels are durable and light but before buying a wheel keep in mind the safety factor.

Tires are the most important parts of the mountain bike. They should have a good grip for a smooth experience. A bad tire can sour up your whole journey ending it up in some gutter.

Suspension System

Today the suspension system has become essential for a mountain bike and with improved technology, suspensions are now cheaper and simpler to handle. This is evident in fork suspension system of hardtail mountain bikes.

Knowing about the components of a mountain bike will make your bike live long and healthy always ready for a rousing journey.
