uncategorized Which are the best Mountain Bikes I can buy? And specific parts I should buy? (Shocks, Frames, Etc..)?
My Plan:
I want to start mountain biking everyday so I can get exercise and stay in shape. I will ride 5+ miles a day and progressively increase the miles I ride. I do not want a road bike with skinny tires and curled handle bars. I’m looking to buy or build a Mountain Bike.

The Mountain Bike Must Include:
- Several gears for long distance riding and up-hills.
- Good and great shocks.
- Durable frame.

In your answer, please include any of the following:

- Brand names of good mountain bikes

- Brand names of bike parts (shocks, frames, tires, etc.)

- Prices (how much did you buy your bike for, how much were the parts (if any) that you put into the bike. If you built your own custom mountain bike.. how much were each part and the total amount you put into your bike.

- Specific Mountain Bikes (some brand names, for example Trek makes several different bikes. So go into specifics.

- Bikes I should avoid (Maybe you had a bad experience with certain bikes whether it be bad or cheap parts or durability problem with the bike)

- Additional Information (any other information that can be helpful or anything that I forgot to mention that will help me decide what kind of bike I should but or build)

- Custom Built Bikes (if you built your own bike, include what parts you have used, brand names, prices, colors, etc..)

If anyone chooses to answer this question you do not have to include all of the information I have asked for in your answer. You can simply name Mountain Bikes that you like or that you know are good. If you are really into biking or have a custom built bike, please include as much information on your bike as possible. You can also website links to specific bikes. Thank you everyone for helping me find the right Mountain Bike to buy or build! I appreciate everyone taking their time out to answer my question.

“Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.”
- John F. Kennedy
cycle guy: I’m mostly going to ride on roads, down to the beach. I live near woods where I might ride in, but I’m sticking to the roads mostly. I’ve ridden road bikes with thin tires, those bikes ride nice but I like the feel of Mountain Bikes.

I wanted to give as much information as possible so people wouldn’t answer just go to a bike shop. That’s easy to do, I’d rather ask people who love and enjoy riding.

My Budget is up to $1500. I’m not necessarily a beginner when it comes to riding, I used to ride all the time, it’s just been a few years and technology has changed. Thanks Again!

Mountain Bikes: Basics

Edit Article |

]]>

“Get a bicycle.  You will certainly not regret it, if you live” This quote is related to the famous writer Mark Twain. Although this was said many years ago, it seems that only in the recent two or three decades that biking has become a prominent hobby practiced by many, either for fun, or for keeping shape.

Various kind of biking are commonly used, among which there are the road biking, mountain biking, street biking, dirt biking, and other variation of them. Each of the biking type requires a specific bike to be used. Mountain bikes, for example, differ from road bikes. A mountain bike, in contrast to road bike is targeted for off-road bikes and for terrain biking.

As such, mountain bikes are designed to be more robust than road bikes for example. Mountain biking includes riding in various harsh terrain conditions such as sand, mud, rocks, water, and narrow unpaved side-mountain topography. Mountain bikes must withstand such devastating conditions, avoiding bike damage, and preventing un-necessary injuries to the rider. That is why mountain bikes commonly use wide tires to absorb the massive shocks caused by the bad trek conditions. Specific shock observes are used, both in front wheel and rear wheel. Mountain bikes are also designed so that it would be easier for the rider to use his power for climbing hills.

The vast inventory available bike types make it, specifically for starters, most frustrating to look for the right bike for them. As already implied, there are many types of bikes, and there are many sub-types. Choosing the right mountain bike involves, of course, the budget available, as mountain bikes are not so cheap. Need to see if the design fits the rider position, and find bikes with the right suspension.

Personally I would not go for the “latest and greatest” bike available as the first choice. Rather I would emphasize safety aspects, and purchase the right accessories such as helmet and gloves, knee and elbow protection. Then I would join a group of starters. Only after riding for some time, and verifying that this is the kind of sport I can keep up with, I would upgrade to a better more expensive bike.

Women’s mountain bikes, which should I buy?

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

I want a mountain bike to replace my 10 year old bike that was stolen. My old bike was a Specialized Rock Hopper hard tail front shock with tons of post factory addons (handlebars, bike computer, clipless pedals, to name a few).

In my budget of $700 for all of the above, I can either buy retail a Giant Rainier W for $650 or a Specialized Myca for $610 (or another Rock Hopper which is not a women’s specific bike for $650). Both are from dealer retailers and not on Craig’s List or used. Then I’d need to buy afterwards the bike bag and the pedals/computer etc.

I still have my helmet and my mountain bike shoes and don’t need those, but I need to make sure the computer, bag, and clipless pedals (if I want them) are in my $700 budget.

I am willing to consider a reputable online seller or Nashbar/Performance and REI but these 2 bikes are the first that I’d seriously consider buying.

I plan to ride on trails and up steep hills and not as much single track terrain but I want that option.

It is a strong and powerful bike that has some distinguished feature involving broad tires and sturdy handles. These are mostly used for cycling on uneven terrain. Other names widely used for these bikes are trail and dirt bikes. These bikes are usually used in sports and shock absorbers. This bike rolls over terrain and objects in a better way and because of its low weight the bike is able to accelerate speeds faster.

Buying a Mountain Bike: Some Guidelines: There are many important aspects that are really important while you are going to buy a mountain bike. First determine the price range that you can offer for a new bike because these may be so expensive. After settle on your expenditure just look those that come in that particular range. You can easily purchase these bikes from your local shops.

Mountain bikes are actually designed for different landscapes and ridings. So, figure out the exact type of riding that you want. Determine whether the track is smooth or mountainous or rocky. So, buy only that suits and fits your style.

It is mostly recommended to buy full suspension bikes because these are more comfortable and offers better control. It is better to purchase these bikes in fall seasons. At that time the consumer may save a fair amount because springs and summers are the peak season of these bikes. However, market surveys and researches for a product is the great way to find the best item available.

A Comparison of a Mountain Bike with Road Bikes:

Mountain bikes are different from road bicycles in many ways. They have comparatively small frame with wide tires. These also have large range of gears that help the bike to climb on hills and pass over hurdles. Moreover, a strong handle bar that helps in upright position for the rider. Disc brakes are used than rim brake that is most often used in road cycles. Helmets are also provided to the riders for protection if of falling on rocky, rough, mountainous and sandy terrain. The riders use shoes similar to that one used for hiking and climbing to get better grip when bike move over hills, obstacles and rocks.

Useful tips:

Riding positions: It is very technical to use these bikes. The biker should keep his body upright. This makes even weight distribution to make the climbing easier on steep hills. If the rider is biking downhill, he should keep his weight on rear wheel and hands on bars.

Braking: Mostly the rear brakes are used when moving downhill. Disc brakes are very important because if the other brakes are wet, it will be more difficult to stop at once. It is essential to speed up before any obstacle than brake.

Keep your line: Keep on the lines while riding. Look carefully the logs, holes, roots and streams. Watch carefully the changing landscape. Keep yourself in control and strong grip on handles.

Standing: On some particular terrain, it requires to stand. However, it is better to pedal than to stand but paddling requires more effort. Mostly the downhill riding requires standing on pedals.

Attitude: Attitude is very important. Keep yourself cool and calm. Avoid taking any risk. Look ahead and make yourself completely aware when and where to break. Watch videos to learn more techniques. Enjoy the riding with wildlife and views around.

Renovation pruning

Overgrown and unproductive climbers can be given a new lease of life by hard pruning. The method you use will depend on the type of climbers you are tackling. If your climbers have got out of control or produce all their flowers out of sight at the top of the plants, you may need to take decisive action. The best time to carry out drastic pruning of climbers is during the dormant season, between autumn and spring. When there are no leaves it is easier to see what you are doing and make the cuts

Single Posts and tripods

Many climbers are suitable for training up single posts, often called pillars, although it is probably best to avoid very vigorous climbers. If space permits, a series of pillars can be erected along a path, linked garland fashion by chunky rope along which climbers can grow. Climbers also look effective trained up tripods or, alternatively, you can make your own supports from canes.

If you want to get into a fun sport that will allow you to get plenty of exercise, get into shape, and offer you challenges that you won’t find elsewhere – all while enjoying an abundance of nature – you might want to start thinking about mountain bikes. Mountain biking is a popular sport that has been around for numerous years, but recently, with the new technology that goes into the manufacturing of today’s mountain bikes, there seems to be a new interest in this sport.

If the sport of mountain biking isn’t something that you know a lot about, you may have the wrong idea about the sport. You’ve seen the mountain bikers on the television sports channels jumping obstacles and racing down dirt trails – and racing is one aspect of mountain biking. However, racing is not required. In fact, most mountain bikers don’t race at all.

Mountain biking for most people can be compared to hiking. The point is to get out, get exercise, and experience nature. Yes, there will be obstacles to maneuver around on them more advanced trails, but many people are just out for the pleasure of riding in nature – just like hikers are out to enjoy the walk and the nature. Some mountain bikers are leisurely riders. Some like the challenges that they face out on the trails – but they aren’t in any hurry. Other’s like both the challenges and the racing! The path you choose is up to you.

With this new light on the sport of mountain biking, you may now be interested in getting involved in this sport. Maybe you want to lose weight. Maybe you just want to get more exercise. Then again, maybe you like the thought of enjoying nature, but you aren’t big on walking, and prefer to ride. No matter what your reasons for your interest are, you will definitely need a mountain bike – finding a place to ride it is the easy part.

As a beginner, you really won’t have any idea what you need in the way of a mountain bike. Therefore, it is in your best interest to buy a very basic, yet sturdy, mountain bike that can be upgraded at a later date. Visit your local bike dealer, and talk to them. Let them know that you are just starting out, and that you want a basic bike that you can upgrade later. If they try to sell you something expensive – more than $500 – walk away and visit a different store.

You might also consider purchasing a used bike from a private individual. Used bikes can be found online, through the printed classifieds, and even through bike dealers. Look around your area – and online – to see what is available.

Before making a purchase, it is always a good idea to talk to other mountain bikers. Ask them what bike they started with, and what they would suggest for you. The best information you will find will come from the people who are already deeply into the sport.

Once you’ve made a purchase, you need to find a place to ride. Are there any state parks or national forests in your area? Are there wooded areas that aren’t fenced off? These are ideal places to ride. However, you should never ride on private property without permission. If you can’t think of any place that might have bike trails, do a little research online. Type in ‘bike trails in Alabama’ or ‘mountain bike trails in Georgia’ or whatever state you live in into the search box of any search engine, and you will find quite a bit of information!

Look for sites that offer reviews of bike trails that you want to visit. These reviews will save you a lot of time, and help you avoid the trails that either aren’t worth your time, or aren’t suited to your skill level. Reading is actually a big part of mountain biking if you are a beginner! You should also consider purchasing a few mountain bikes videos. These videos will help you learn the basics before you set off on a trail!
