The amount of its advantages is almost equal to the different types of injuries you can get. TeamCyclist, the leading online cycling store, presents us with this article about the common injuries in cycling.
Cycling is one of the best ways to give our bodies a full work out. Aside from being a great exercise, it also serves as the cheapest mode of transportation. Another advantage of cycling is you get to enjoy the nature by riding around beautiful places and getting the best out of the breeze. Cycling also is a form of leisure or a great way to bond with family and friends. And lastly, cycling is fun! Like mentioned earlier, this much freebies from riding a bike also equals to the risks you take. Here are the most common injuries someone can get in cycling:
Heat Stroke – Heat stroke is defined as a serious condition which results from too much exposure to intense heat. Since the ideal season to ride your bike is summer, heat stroke becomes a common injury. Your body may lose its ability to cool itself resulting to severe headache, high fever, dry skin, and dehydration. To prevent this, avoid cycling when temperature is not bearable and srink plenty of water.
Cramps – Cramps is defined as an unpleasant, mostly painful, sensations cause by over contraction of muscles or over shortening. This happens because of severe muscle fatigue and sodium imbalance. What you need to do to avoid this is do warm ups first before cycling especially if the distance is long. Also, take in lots of water to balance your fluids and electrolytes.
Back Pain – Back pain, or commonly called Dorsalgia is an unpleasant sensation that originates from muscles, bones, joints, and nerves which is felt at the back. This only results if the bike that you are using is not the right size for you. When choosing or repairing your bike, make sure that the handlebar is an inch lower than your saddle for a normal bike. If you are going to purchase a mountain bike, it should be two to four inches lower.
Knee Pain – Knee pain results from different factors. Riding for too far away distances, riding too hard, and low rotation per minute are some which causes knew pain. Like cramps, this can be avoided by warming up first because knew pain also results from sudden strenuous activity. It is better to ride slowly at first if you haven’t been cycling for some time.
Head injuries – Among all injuries, head injuries are the most dangerous of all. This involves risks for our central control unit whish is the brain. It is always best to ride with proper protection to reduce these risks. A helmet is a must in cycling. Make sure the helmet you use is durable and trust-worthy. Check out TeamCyclist for quality helmets and other cycling gears.
