Enjoying Cycling For Recreation Purposes

Monday, September 20th, 2010

uncategorized Enjoying Cycling For Recreation Purposes

Most families enjoy cycling together for recreational purposes because it is very relaxing and gives them a good chance to become closer. In the past, families only allowed children to ride their bikes in their own neighborhood but the areas where children ride has expanded far from home. The children had very few choices over where they could ride to enjoy nature because the streets were often paved in asphalt and were deep within the city limits.

The chance to go cycling in the woods was very limited because the homes that children who could afford bicycles were often located in the middle of suburbia and construction crews had cut most of the trees down when they built the neighborhoods. Families turned to public recreation areas to give their children a chance to enjoy fresh air and sunshine and the opportunity to spend a little time together.

Bike paths are plentiful throughout all national parks, and children only have to consider what type of biking that they want to do. They can go cycling on nature paths if they have a bicycle equipped with tires that are suitable for all terrains, and some are lucky enough to get a mountain bike as a gift from family or friends. Boys would generally prefer to own a mountain bike because their recreational interests lean more toward doing stunts and driving bikes through dirt than riding one on an asphalt surface that could do serious damage to their body if they fell off.

Little girls loved riding along bike paths that were far from busy traffic areas because that is where they felt the safest. The bicycles that they would bring with them to these parks would be one that only one person could ride, but they might bring along a tricycle if they had a small sister that wanted to ride with them.

When families visited a State Park, they could all enjoy riding various types of bikes for recreational purposes and parents would know that the children were getting good exercise while having a good time too. Some of the children might race against each other in parking lots, or they could take their cycling to the streets where they could pedal for hours without any obstacles getting in their way. There were many people who practiced their cycling team challenges at the park, and children loved to sit and watch them race.

Most children were satisfied that they were outdoors and rarely came when called the first time because they would not be ready to inside. When using a bicycle for recreation purposes, most children would find things to put in the spokes just so they could hear the puttering sounds as the pieces of cardboard went round and round. Cycling is still fun for these children and they probably will take their own children biking one day. Cycling in state parks will be around for a long time to come and most children know this and have the presence of mind and patience to wait for the next opportunity.

Try Tandem Cycling

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

uncategorized Try Tandem Cycling

A bicycle built for two. If you have never tried riding a tandem bicycle you may be missing out. Tandem cycling is one of those things you seem to either love or hate. Since it requires two cyclists you have to be able to play well with others. If you are very independent and need to do things your way and your way only it might not be the thing for you. If you do work well with others and have a partner that you enjoy riding with it can be a great experience.

If you like to talk with your partner while riding it is much easier to do on a tandem since you are closer together with out having to ride side by side which is not practical on most roads.

A big benefit to riding a tandem is when there is a difference in riding ability or strength of two cyclists. The tandem averages out the difference allowing the stronger rider to work as hard as he or she wants while at the same time allowing the other person to keep up with out being pushed to the point where it is not enjoyable. Often if two cyclists are of different ability the faster rider will have to stop and wait for the second rider to catch up and rest. The tandem eliminates this completely. Both riders do have to peddle since the cranks are connected so there is no sitting back coasting for either rider. For example if one rider can go out and do a fifty mile ride and the other can only do a twenty mile ride on their own you might well be able to do a thirty or forty mile ride as a team.

Riding a tandem can provide you both with a strong sense of accomplishment and team work. You really have to work together in order to get where you’re going and it requires a lot of communication to make it come together.

The person in the front of a tandem who steers; pedals and shifts is called the captain. The person in back has the job of peddling and has the benefit of being able to enjoy the scenery with out constantly watching the road is called the stoker. If one of the riders is going to stop pedaling for some reason they need to communicate this to the other rider because your cranks are connected by a drive chain and fixed gears. It is common courtesy for the captain to alert the stoker to large bumps that are coming up so they have time to prepare. The stoker doesn’t have as clear a view of the road ahead and therefore has a harder time seeing upcoming bumps.

As with other bicycles tandems come in various styles. There are road tandems; cross tandems; and mountain bike tandems. Which you choose will depend on the type of riding you do. Tandems do tend to cost more than a single bike but would be less than buying two individual bikes. The frames and wheels are built stronger than a typical single bike due to the extra weight they carry with two passengers aboard.

Tandems do take some getting used to since they are so different to drive than a single bike. I recommend borrowing or renting one to try it and see if it is something you enjoy. The first time I rode a tandem I thought it felt like driving a tractor trailer. They have a much wider turning radius due to the longer wheel base. Starting and stopping can be a challenge since you both have to get your feet in the pedals and moving together. You have much more weight on the bike so down hills can be very fast. The down side of that is it also takes more effort to get up hills. If you are riding in a hilly area like Vermont you will probably want to have a triple crank so you can gear down for the larger climbs. On flat roads tandems can be faster than single bikes because the stoker is in affect drafting the captain. You achieve twice the power with the wind resistance of one.

I highly recommend trying tandem riding. If it is something that works for you and your partner it could be the beginning of many miles of riding a bicycle built for two.

mountain bike accessories What bicycle accessories do i need for cycling ? ( i use a mountain bike)?
I mean ok, lets say we go for a race with a 5 year old Mountain bike, that had a lot of accidents (only small ones), but all the components are Shimano, except the Cycle computer, the front brakes fork (the legs at the front brake), the wheel covers ( because they got worn ) and the back wheel ( worn out ). OK the front wheel is Berretta and maybe the whole frame is not Shimano .

When i used to go at the bike shop for some maintenance i asked them for any contests and they told me in a way that my bicycle is actually an old damaged piece of metal .
So then, im not going in a race with this bicycle , but i will still practice and practice and the long trips that i make with this mountain bike are on road mostly and, i try to go faster and faster each time, on each track that i make ( i plan different routes) .
That’s why i would like to improve on my safety in case of an accident ( i faint because of my Anemia for example), and that’s why i would like to know, what are the accessories that i need to have for ME and for MY BICYCLE .
I could make a back pack, and i have a bottle holder on the frame, so please tell me all you know .

What Are Specialist Cycling Shoes For?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

uncategorized What Are Specialist Cycling Shoes For?

Gone are the days where you would tuck your jeans in your socks and ride your bike in any old footwear that you felt comfortable in. Today you would be laughed at and while for the guy who rides his bike to and from work the above may be acceptable, in the modern World you need modern footwear and that means specialist cycling shoes of one form or another.

It depends what sort of cycling you do as to what type of cycling shoe you will choose as there are one or two different styles and types to compare. There are a few key features depending on how seriously you take your cycling. You may want to choose a more rigid cycling shoe if you want to get power to the pedals and therefore the wheels as efficiently as possible. However, you probably have to compromise in the area of off-cycle flexibility if you go for a really rigid shoe. Modern cycling shoes also enable rigid attachment to the pedals meaning that they have various cleats etc on the bottom of the shoe.

If you are into road racing then you will find that they tend to be quite rigid and are not really suitable for walking in as the cleats protrude from the the shoe to allow secure attachment to the pedal.

If you are looking for something a little more practical then maybe a touring shoe would work as these tend to have treads (where a road racing shoe does not) and the cleat for attachment to the pedal is recessed making them much easier to walk in.

Mountain bike shoes also have a recessed cleat to enable walking and they also tend to have studs in the sole to aid the rider when they have to dismount and negotiate obstacles.

Of course if you still want to wear your normal shoes you can still get the traditional toe clip and strap setup which attaches to the pedal so that you can slip you shoe in and out of the clips quite easily. If you are a more serious rider though you will want to make sure that your foot can’t slip out of the clips. This means that you will have to bend down and manually adjust the straps to get your foot in and out. For the serious rider this is a major inconvenience and is the main reason why these systems have been replaced by clipless pedals.

Finally you may find that overshoes are a really useful piece of kit to have available. These are simply shoe coverings that are for use in wet weather as they are waterproof. They tend to have a hole in the bottom to allow your cleats to protrude so you can still attach to the pedals. They also tend to be made of fairly lightweight fabric so they’re not really designed for walking on as they would wear out fairly quickly.

Mountain biking is great exercise and a superb way to explore the outdoors, the city and your nearby area.  You don’t need to have the highest spec mountain bike to go riding and have fun, although it does help if you wear the right bike wear and active clothing.  Bike wear and cycling clothing must be comfortable and breathable when you’re zooming across the countryside.  A good place to start is with active clothing that has been specifically designed with cycling and biking technicalities at the forefront.

Cycling jackets and fleeces

Cycling jackets vary enormously from lightweight soft-shell jackets through to the heavier 3 in 1 jackets.  When you’re planning to purchase lightweight soft-shell jackets for cycling or mountain biking then you should think about a jacket that is waterproof – both with or without taped seams, windproof, and with protective high visibility reflectors designed on the jacket. It is important to purchase a cycling jacket that has been designed to be large enough to withstand the rigorous movements of the cyclist. A windproof and waterproof jacket with a long back is most advantageous to the rider as it prevents the splash of mud, dirt and rain soaking through to your clothes.

Cycling late, whether it be thrill seeking adventures in the hills or simply cycling home from work in the dark it is advisable to have some kind of reflective material on your jacket Many bike jackets, trousers, shorts and rucksacks have reflective piping outlining the item which is beneficial for others to see you when riding on the roads and at night.

Cycling shorts

Selecting the most suitable cycling shorts and trousers is quite simple. Again it would be a wise decision to select some shorts with reflective panels and comfort sewn in. A number of shorts have padding in the areas that require it most, making lengthy mountain biking and cycling sessions much better in terms of comfort.  When buying shorts for cycling and mountain biking you can choose between loose fit and tight fit – it is purely a matter of preference.  Many shorts are made from an elastane and lycra mix of material making them ideal for flexible use and active wear when on mountain bikes.

Regardless of your decision on what you decide to buy it’s worth taking a look at a wide range of clothing and making sure that you’re comfy and flexible in your clothing!

While Giro d’Italia champion Ivan Basso, who is returning to the Tour de France, arguably will be the most popular Liquigas rider in the eyes of the general public, his teammate Roman Kreuziger could well steal his show if the young Czech holds his promises.
