I joined a bike club for the first time, what do I need?

mountain bike gear I joined a bike club for the first time, what do I need?
I already have a bike. Does it matter that it’s a mountain bike and I’m biking in a city?

First off, what do I need to do to make sure my bike won’t get me killed? It’s been sitting in a shed for a couple years, but I refilled the tires and looked it over. I tested the brakes -first the smart way, then the stupid way- and they’re fine, nothing’s rusty, and I put some extra oil on the chain just to be safe. I could take it in for a tune-up, but that would run me at least $40 that I don’t have. Second, what’s the rule of thumb for bicycle seat height? I think I’ve outgrown my bike (I got it when I was 12 and now I’m 15 and about nine inches taller) but I want to be sure.

Third, do I need any special stuff? All I have is a bike with a water bottle holder and a helmet. I’m not looking in to serious racing or anything (yet) so do I need gloves or special shoes? How much would that cost, and could I fake it? I’m funding this myself so it has to be cheap.

Thanks in advance.
Also, my dad is good at this kind of thing, how hard is it to put a water bottle holder and a kickstand on a bike if you aren’t a mechanic?

mountain bike gear Need opinion on good comfortable exercise shoes?
I do a lot of exercise to stay in shape. I have usually worn cheap no brand shoes that I also wear at work in a warehouse. I would say I am in good shape, can mountain bike 20+ miles, run a mile in 6 min etc. However at work just from standing all day my legs and feet get abnormally sore and tired and I think a better pair of shoes would help out. What male shoes should I look into that I can run and walk around in? Thanks in advance.

I need help with shoes for biking?

mountain bike gear I need help with shoes for biking?
I’ve broke 4 shoelaces since the start of year mountain biking. I need to find a pair of shoes that I can wear mountain biking, without laces. Vans and converse slipons seem a bit flimsy, any other suggestions. Right now I have been wearing skate shoes without laces, and I tried Doc Martens but the laces broke two fast. Now they don’t have shoelaces. Any suggestions, I’ve trying tucking the laces in, and double knotting, yet trail side branches, and rubbing next to the gears and chain, break them quickly. Anyone else with this problem?

With so much comfort, safety and range mountain bike is the best thing to have for a ride. One of the very best to ride is a Mountain Bike. Priced around £100 to £600, it is one of the best pieces one could get his hands upon. It is recommended for people who want to go for a hike or mountain biking or treks or ride in unpaved terrain. It comes in amazing colors which makes it looks very expensive. It is well worth the money spent. It is one of the best bikes available in the market.

Haro Mountain bike review: The bike feels very stiff while ascending and gives optimum performance. Riding is highly comfortable and enjoyable. They have a rugged and resilient structure that means they would last long. They are very popular among the top riders. It is very convenient because of the simplicity in its design that makes it very easy to repair. The bike has enough strength to go on epic rides but it may get a little uncomfortable. Overall mountain bikes are one of the very best available in the market. It is available in many price ranges affordable for all. Go for mountain bikes for great performance and an enjoyable ride.

Rocky Mountain Bike Review: Even if one is professional or an endurance rider, a competitive rider, an enthusiast or a rider who just wants an enjoyable ride it is the perfect bike to buy. It has been purposely designed for mountain biking and pleasure riding so why buy anything else. Though the life of the bike is much affected on an extremely steep terrain it is always worth the buy if maintained properly. The limitations of the bike are very few and the advantages are more.

Barracuda mountain bike review: The components used for making the bike are efficient and very strong. One can also upgrade a few areas to lessen the weight or make it look more stylish or even to improve performance of the bike. But if the buyer is on a budget then the bike has an excellent built with stylish looks. Even many cheap varieties are available which are worth buying. They are worth it if one doesn’t plan for an epic marathon race in one of them.

Climbing is definitely a strong point in these bikes. They can clear the steep slopes which one might have never thought of taking with ease.

The advantages of using a mountain bike are;

They are very light in weight, they provide better climbing and acceleration, they are laterally stiff, they give us a submissive ride and absorb vibrations and most important of all they are drop-dead gorgeous.

They come in many colours like satin grey, vivid pink, black, blue with white spokes, grey, vivid purple, satin blue, hazy red, sky blue, yellow, orange, green etc.

This allows the buyer to choose his best colour and show it off.

The colours are very beautiful and match well.

Overall, it is a win-win situation

He will be 34 years old. Here are some of his hobbies and interests. Sportbikes – big time! Loves motorcycle racing, working on bikes, buying and selling bikes. He likes mountain bike riding, he likes audioslave, smashing pumpkins, he likes his play station 3 and plays call of duty all the time. He likes Coors light and mexican food. He and his friend bought a race car for grass roots type racing, it is an older domestic car. He does not like NASCAR, clothes, jewelery stuff like that. He has a new garage that has no decoration. He spends tons of time looking at bike forums. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Do You Need to Stay Healthy if You’re Fit?

Surprisingly, if you’re anything like me, you really don’t know.

Why not?

Well, it’s likely because we get so caught up in trying to build the perfect body, we forget to measure our health.

“So in truth, in the process of building a better body, we regrettably may forget all about our health.” In other words, we’re so busy training harder and harder to achieve the coveted six-pack set of abs, and we’re working even harder running on a treadmill every morning to peel off those layers of stubborn fat from our bellies… So in truth, in the process of building a better body, we regrettably may forget all about our health.

Interestingly, many people believe that health is a byproduct of living a life full of physical fitness. That health is attained in the pursuit of building a better body.

So I thought too.

You may remember (from a previous, “Truth Matters” Editor’s Letter of mine, where I revealed one of my life’s biggest “Ah-ha moments”)… I confessed to using anabolic steroids. I’m not proud of it. But, I want to be honest because in all good friendships, you need to show your warts if you want to strengthen the relationship.

Anyway, at the time, while to any ordinary passerby I must have appeared-on the outside-to be super healthy, I was actually killing myself on the inside. Day by day, the substances I was using were damaging my health.

It wasn’t until years later that I had an epiphany which would turn me on to the constant pursuit of building the best body my genetics would allow, and later, would help me discover my purpose: devoting the rest of my life to teaching others how to do the same.

During this time, however, I learned something profound: in life, we either move toward health or closer to death.

Sadly, in my experience, I see most people choose to wait until the later nearly happens-like a heart attack hits, an ulcer strikes, or a bout of cancer erupts-before they put their lives in order and get on the “health-kick” bandwagon. (Sometimes, unfortunately, they wait until it’s too late though!)

“…we ‘think’ we are healthy, but in fact, there’s a good chance we are not that healthy after all.” The truth is, there is no in-between. Yet, that’s where most of us live. Right smack dab in the middle. In other words, we “think” we are healthy, but in fact, there’s a good chance we are not that healthy after all.

Make no mistake. Health is hard to measure. Think about it. That’s why it’s so hard for most people to take a multivitamin. You take it. You don’t necessarily feel healthier the next day. Or the next. Or a month later for that matter. So, you stop taking it.

On the other hand, when you take a fat-loss pill, or a creatine-based supplement, if it’s a quality product, after about a week or two, you see noticeable results. You can measure it. That’s why we so easily fall in love with developing our physiques and yet can lose sight of the level of our health.

I have to admit, up until about four years ago-when my wife and I had our first child-I thought I was relatively healthy. So I wasn’t overly obsessed about my health. At 30 years young, working out with weights regularly, eating smart, nutritious foods, I “felt” pretty healthy. Little did I know how much abuse those anabolic agents, which I had taken over ten years ago, would have poisoned my health.

Then I attended a seminar in Denver, Colorado, where I was first introduced to Michael F. Roizen, a preventive gerontologist from the University of Chicago. I was invited by some fellow entrepreneurs who, like me, worked long, stressful hours during the week, didn’t always get the proper amount of sleep every night, and wanted to hear what Dr. Roizen had to say about the subject of health.

What was really intriguing was, unlike what I assumed I would learn that day… I came away with more than just how healthy (or unhealthy) I really was: I learned something entirely new… something he called our “Real Age.”

You see, Dr. Roizen has developed a scientific practice around his theory of Real Age. Basically, he’s compiled a way to determine your biological age, which may, for better or worse in many cases, be a lot different than your chronological age-your calendar days.

During the seminar, I learned that Dr. Roizen had spent the last nine years compiling a list of over 100 health-related factors. Among them, tobacco and alcohol use, diet, prescription and over-the-counter drug use, your parent’s health, even pet ownership and the highest educational level you’ve completed. He then diligently reviewed thousands upon thousands of scientific studies concerning various lifestyle, psychological, and health-related issues and weaved all of these factors into a questionnaire to determine your “Real Age.” Depending on how well you take care of yourself, your Real Age might be years younger-or older-than the calendar indicates.

“Dr. Roizen’s objective is to help you identify how healthy, or unhealthy, you really are-despite what you may think of yourself-and then offer up sound advice on how to correct it.”The questionnaire is rather arduous. It takes up to 45 to complete. But, in my humble opinion, it’s well worth the investment in time. And make no mistake about it, my friend, if you’ve taken your health for granted, be prepared for a shock.

After you complete the questionnaire, Dr. Roizen then explains how to follow a personalized “age-reduction plan” using a range of methods, from quick fixes (like wearing a helmet while bicycling) to moderately easy changes (avoid overexposure to the sun and radon exposure), all the way to the most difficult changes (reduce the stress in your life). You may be surprised to discover there’s no earth-shattering advice from him, by any means. The advice is practical and seems almost common sense. What I found most interesting, though, was discovering what my biological age was, versus my chronological age.

Needless to say, Dr. Roizen’s objective is to help you identify how healthy, or unhealthy, you really are-despite what you may think of yourself-and then offer up sound advice on how to correct it. In fact, he then shows you how to knock 10 to 20 years off the stated biological age, depending on how far you exceed it.

You can take the Real Age test for free, online. To calculate your Real Age, by taking the patented Real Age test, simply click here. Once you know your Real Age, you’ll receive personalized recommendations, health information, and solutions to help make your Real Age younger.

By the way, it may startle you to find out that the first time I took the Real Age test, my biological age revealed a 48-year-old man. (Remember, I just turned 34 in August.) To say I was disappointed in myself would be an understatement. Just imagine. As someone who has, for over 15 years, taught and made a conscience effort to live by the fundamental truths of residing in a strong, healthy body… I was devastated.

However taken back I was at the time, instead of blaming it solely on my chemically abusive younger years and accepting it as my punishment, I chose to use this upsetting news to provide me with the motivation to start making fundamental changes in my life.

Believe it or not, little changes were all that was required.

…like wearing a bike helmet (which I always thought was for wimps), whenever I went on bikes rides on my mountain bike. I started taking CO-Q10 supplements, daily, for my heart (which I always ignored because I told myself that was only for “health nuts”), despite the fact that both my grandfathers had heart attacks at an early age.

Again, like I said. Little, “healthy-minded” things.

“Making better choices not only adds years to life but, as Dr. Roizen indicates, it also slows your speed of aging now. The choices you have made until now not only affect your life expectancy but also your Real Age.”These little things, as they added up, started to make a significant difference in my biological age. In fact, over the course of the last three years, I’m proud to say my Real Age is now below my chronological age. I’m 30 in Real Age.

Think about it. It makes perfect sense, doesn’t it?! Making better choices not only adds years to life but, as Dr. Roizen indicates, it also slows your speed of aging now. The choices you have made until now not only affect your life expectancy but also your Real Age.

So, does your devotion to physical fitness and the aesthetics of your physique define your level of health? I’m sure you’d like to think so. But, besides regular visits to your primary physician for annual “check-ups,” how sure are you about your overall health?

Wouldn’t you like to know?

Finding balance between fitness and health is the hallmark of living in a strong, healthy body… and living your absolute best life!

How do I start living? I need some advice!?

mountain bike gear How do I start living? I need some advice!?
Alright; so I’m that guy at your local party who barely talks. I’m that guy that gets asked a ton of questions; and always gives awkward answers. I’m that guy who never wears the awesome clothes, never has his hair right.. You know what I mean; the loner – no need for further explaination.

I want to start living. I really do. I’m 19; I have no hobbies, no motivation, no job, and no future. I have only three friends, with who I really start to get out of touch, signed up for my study to late and have a whole year of nothing ahead of me. Pathetic, really. I’ve been thinking a lot today (had an awkward party again yesterday evening) and it’s time for a change. And I need some tips from you guys to help me get started. This time I’m not going to back out of something when the time is there. I’m going on a holiday from August 6h till August 15th, and I’m planning to start on the day of departure. This is what I’ve come up with so far today. Please reply with what I should add to my to-do list.

August 6th:
-Get rid of piercing.
-Get a tan.
-Become vegetarian again, instead of vegan (which I am now. Will help giving some extra energy)
-Stop scratching my zits all the time; so I can finally get rid of them.

After August 15th:
-Get a different haircut.
-Ask my dentist about whitening teeth.
-Sign up for a job.
-Sell the majority of my games.
-Really start working on learning to play guitar.
-Spend less time on my computer – more time with friends.
-Go out in weekends – meet new people.
-Buy new clothes. Dress more fancy.
-Start working out again.

Within a month of August 15th:
-Have a job.
-Start lessons for a motorbike driving license.
-Buy a mountain bike; join a mountain biking club.
-Lost all zits (best case scenario; I only scratch them when I’m stressed out)

Within half a year of August 15th:
-See how things have worked out; make a recap and summarize all changes.
-Sell my TV, all games and my Xbox.
-Start looking to buy a motorbike.
-Experiment with different styles; try out a beard or something.
-Have whiter teeth, a better haircut, look better, and especially more healthy, dress fancier. Have at least three new friends.

What should I add? And does anyone have any tips in general? It’s hard to make a change; I’ve been the way I am pretty much all my life.
Thanks for the answers! I’m afraid I’ve send out the wrong image though. I’m not a basement dweller – in fact I’m in quite above average shape. Used to work out a lot in the past. And yeah; I need to keep an eye out so that I won’t lose my own personality. I will :)

Mountain Biking 101: What You Need To Fall In Love With This Sport

Summer’s just around the corner and that means all kinds of outdoor fun! This season, why not commit to trying something new? Mountain and trail biking! A great form of exercise for all levels, mountain and trail biking is a terrific way to get out and enjoy all that nature offers.

If you think you’re ready to give it a try, here are some things you’ll need:

A bike. Known as MTB or ATB (Mountain or All-Terrain) bikes, they range in price from $300 to well over $2,000. As a novice, start by renting a bike (much more affordable at around $40 a day) to see if you like the sport, and the bike model.

A bike rack. Unless you live on the mountain, you’re going to have to drive to your biking destination. Bike racks come in all different styles, from roof-mounted racks from manufacturers like Swangman and Thule, to hitch-mounted carriers like the one available for Isuzu SUVs.

A helmet. While comfy clothes suited to the weather is always recommended (stay away from loose pants that can get caught in the bike’s gears), a helmet is a must. They can be rented or bought, but they are invaluable in the event of an accident, especially in areas where emergency medical help isn’t just a hop, skip, and jump away.

A rehydration system. This could be anything from water bottles strapped on the bike, to back-mounted rehydration systems. It’s not about how you rehydrate, it’s that you do it often.

A cell phone. Just in case of and emergency, bring a cell phone.

Trail maps. Many can be downloaded from the internet or bought at the local ski resort. As a novice, stick to clear, well-marked trails. Keep the map handy in case of an emergency, or in the event you get lost.

Most importantly, have fun. Take as many breaks as you’d like to stop and explore the idyllic setting or to catch your breath. Bike at your own pace and enjoy the well-deserved break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
