what kind of cycling shoes should i get?

mountain bike gear what kind of cycling shoes should i get?
i ride a fixed road bike and ive already decided to get spd pedals so i could ride to school and back and stuff with regular shoes, but i dont know what type of shoe i want to get, i want to get road shoes for the stiffness of it, but i like mountain bike shoes because of the recessed cleats so i can walk arround a bit, i usually bike to the beach with my friends and thats about 20 miles and some of us swim but i usually walk arround or bike farther down to the pier, so im really at a crossroads between between moutain and road, any help?
also, is the stiffness between road and moutain shoes that much of a differance?

uncategorized Which are the best Mountain Bikes I can buy? And specific parts I should buy? (Shocks, Frames, Etc..)?
My Plan:
I want to start mountain biking everyday so I can get exercise and stay in shape. I will ride 5+ miles a day and progressively increase the miles I ride. I do not want a road bike with skinny tires and curled handle bars. I’m looking to buy or build a Mountain Bike.

The Mountain Bike Must Include:
- Several gears for long distance riding and up-hills.
- Good and great shocks.
- Durable frame.

In your answer, please include any of the following:

- Brand names of good mountain bikes

- Brand names of bike parts (shocks, frames, tires, etc.)

- Prices (how much did you buy your bike for, how much were the parts (if any) that you put into the bike. If you built your own custom mountain bike.. how much were each part and the total amount you put into your bike.

- Specific Mountain Bikes (some brand names, for example Trek makes several different bikes. So go into specifics.

- Bikes I should avoid (Maybe you had a bad experience with certain bikes whether it be bad or cheap parts or durability problem with the bike)

- Additional Information (any other information that can be helpful or anything that I forgot to mention that will help me decide what kind of bike I should but or build)

- Custom Built Bikes (if you built your own bike, include what parts you have used, brand names, prices, colors, etc..)

If anyone chooses to answer this question you do not have to include all of the information I have asked for in your answer. You can simply name Mountain Bikes that you like or that you know are good. If you are really into biking or have a custom built bike, please include as much information on your bike as possible. You can also website links to specific bikes. Thank you everyone for helping me find the right Mountain Bike to buy or build! I appreciate everyone taking their time out to answer my question.

“Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.”
- John F. Kennedy
cycle guy: I’m mostly going to ride on roads, down to the beach. I live near woods where I might ride in, but I’m sticking to the roads mostly. I’ve ridden road bikes with thin tires, those bikes ride nice but I like the feel of Mountain Bikes.

I wanted to give as much information as possible so people wouldn’t answer just go to a bike shop. That’s easy to do, I’d rather ask people who love and enjoy riding.

My Budget is up to $1500. I’m not necessarily a beginner when it comes to riding, I used to ride all the time, it’s just been a few years and technology has changed. Thanks Again!

Women’s mountain bikes, which should I buy?

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

I want a mountain bike to replace my 10 year old bike that was stolen. My old bike was a Specialized Rock Hopper hard tail front shock with tons of post factory addons (handlebars, bike computer, clipless pedals, to name a few).

In my budget of $700 for all of the above, I can either buy retail a Giant Rainier W for $650 or a Specialized Myca for $610 (or another Rock Hopper which is not a women’s specific bike for $650). Both are from dealer retailers and not on Craig’s List or used. Then I’d need to buy afterwards the bike bag and the pedals/computer etc.

I still have my helmet and my mountain bike shoes and don’t need those, but I need to make sure the computer, bag, and clipless pedals (if I want them) are in my $700 budget.

I am willing to consider a reputable online seller or Nashbar/Performance and REI but these 2 bikes are the first that I’d seriously consider buying.

I plan to ride on trails and up steep hills and not as much single track terrain but I want that option.

What kind of bike should my wife get?

Friday, December 31st, 2010

mountain bike gear What kind of bike should my wife get?
I have my opinion but thought I’d put the question out there. I finally convinced her to try and although she can ride a bike, she has not done so for years. I have 3 bikes but thought it would be nice if she had her own, that fits her properly and all that jazz.

Here’s the situation. After she is ready, she would eventually like to commute to work. The commute is 7.5 miles one way. She’ll be carrying a laptop and some other papers and junk. She’ll also need to pack her professional clothing. It will be city riding with all street paths – she is nervous about riding in traffic (I’ve got books and personal experience to help but thought the info would help add to your suggestion). I’ve described some of my longish regular (50 miles) weekend rides and she liked the sound of that too so maybe we will eventually do 20 or so together. Also, I am not willing to break the bank on this because I really don’t know if she’ll stick with it so please, no high end carbon fiber Wilier or Cervelo. Just looking for your opinion on a type of bike (i.e. road, hybrid, mountain, comfort, cyclocross, etc.)

Thanks for the input.
Thanks all. I was thinking hybrid. I am sure that Joe and mtrlbike suggested a tourer because it can double for the commute and longer weekend rides – good suggestions. Bob is correct about women wanting style – I’ll get her a cute bike but won’t sacrifice function – there are plenty of options so I’m OK there. Those links to commuters seem like hybrids with fenders, lights, and a rack. I have some extra junk I can throw on so I don’t need it to come “fully loaded”, and I like to shop for those types of accessories anyway. Besides, I am sure she will be a fair weather rider so fenders won’t be necessary.

I hadn’t thought of a tourer and appreciate the suggestion. I think the comfort of an upright position will make her more confident on the bike. She would definitely make a reasonable trade off of speed for comfort I think. And, 7.5 miles is a reasonable distance for a hybrid. I’ll talk more with her about what she intends to do on the bike but I don’t think she is ready for a toure
She is a bit timid (only on bikes…definitely not in real life) and I think a more beefy bike that is easier to balance and control would suit her better. Maybe drop handlebars and a clipless system in a couple years . Oh, and Soccerref, I’m trying my best not to push too hard but I get so darn excited. I think if I say the word derailleur or mention a top tube one more time, it’ll be the last time!
