So, you want to get fit, experience the joys of the great outdoors and have a few thrills and spills along the way? Sounds like you need to get out there and buy yourself a mountain bike. But with full suspension, hardtail and a myriad of mountain bike models from a huge variety of quality manufacturers, what type of mountain bike is right for you? Here we offer a few simple tips that may just help you decide.

Firstly, is it a mountain bike you are really after? A mountain bike is great if you want to ride off the road and get into the great outdoors. If you will mainly be riding along the road or pathways, then perhaps you need to look elsewhere. But for now, we’ll assume that a mountain bike is what you’re after. So, the first decision you will have to make is whether you want a mountain bike with, or without, suspension.

If you want a bike that will provide a smooth ride when you’re travelling up and down on rugged, rocky trails, then you might consider a full suspension bike. A hardtail bike on the other hand has no rear suspension and may or may not have front suspension forks. Hardtail bikes generally weigh less than full suspension bikes and are usually cheaper. Hardtails are often a better choice for beginners. Another advantage worth pointing out is that you will use less energy when you’re pedalling on a Hardtail. This is because on a full suspension bike, when you push down on the pedal, some of your force is lost when the rear suspension compresses. If you’re not sure which way to go, ask your local bike dealer and test ride both a hardtail and full suspension bike.

You’ve now decided that you want either a hardtail or full suspension bike. Now, how much are you willing to spend? Mountain bikes are available from a wide variety of manufacturers each with many different models that may range in price from a few hundred dollars up to thousands of dollars. If you’re a beginner, you may be better buying a cheaper bike to start with. You can always upgrade later. However, this will depend on your intentions. If you want to get involved with your local club and compete in some races, then you’ll probably want to spend more money. Again, discuss this with the local bike dealer or speak to your local mountain biking club.

If you have friends into mountain bike riding, then naturally, speak to them and ask their opinion. One word of warning: when you buy a bike, try to avoid buying one from one of the larger department stores. If you do you’ll probably be disappointed because they’re usually of dubious quality with cheaper components such as brakes and gears. And one thing you don’t want is a mountain bike that won’t change gears properly. It will quickly turn you off mountain bike riding forever! And we don’t want that now, do we?

mountain bike accessories Why dont BMX street/dirt bikes utilize some mountain bike parts?
For many years now, a lot of BMXers have demanded lighter bikes.
For example, a way to make BMX street/dirt bikes lighter would be to use MTB bottom brackets, cranks, aluminum seat posts. These parts are still strong but also lighter than bmx parts, especially mtb BB’s and cranks.

If BMX bikes used some of these parts, it would be easier to go to a shop and get parts if more parts utilized mtb parts.

Why aren’t manufacturers doing this?

mountain bike accessories Can some recommend a good web site to order good quality road and mountain bike parts, upgrades, accessories?
I’m new in this forum. I’m stationed in South Korea. I found a bicycle shop here in Taegu but it’s hard to communicate unless I take someone who speaks Korean with me. I would much rather shop online for better prices. Korea seems to outrages on their prices if it’s imported. I currently own an old Raleigh Super Course 555 sl road bike, GT Pantera mountain bike, 27″ Peugeot Carbolite 103 and an old 20″ Banana bike. My goal is restore my old bikes and I would like recommendations on buying and building bikes.

Mountain bikes are designed for off-road riding. Whether made for racing or the more leisurely rider, there are four basic frame designs for mountain bikes: rigid, hard-tail, soft-tail, and full suspension.

The rigid (also commonly known as fully rigid) mountain bikes resemble a conventional sort of bike as you would imagine it. A rigid mountain bike has neither a rear suspension nor a front suspension. These used to be the most common kind of mountain bike but they are rapidly being replaced by the more comfortable models which feature some sort of suspension system. Fully rigid bikes tend to be lower-priced than models with a suspension. Many riders still prefer rigid bikes because it’s what they’re accustomed to, and the feel that the rigid design allows them greater control.

Another common mountain bike design is the hard-tail. Hard-tail mountain bikes are so named because they have a conventional rear end without a suspension. Hard-tails differ from fully rigid bikes in that they have a front suspension. The hard-tail is perhaps the most popular mountain bike design. Many professional riders prefer the feel of a hard-tail and the comfort of a front suspension.

The next kind of mountain bike design is the soft-tail. As you probably guessed, soft-tails employ a rear suspension. Rear suspensions are a more recent innovation than front suspension due to the complexities of the design. Soft-tails are often more expensive than hard-tails, but they also tend to be more forgiving.

Finally there’s the full suspension mountain bike. Bikes with this design feature both front and rear suspensions. These bikes are the latest mountain bike design. For a long time riders avoided full suspension bikes because they were heavy and they tended to sag in the middle like an old swayback horse. It took years for engineers and riders to perfect a viable, functional full suspension mountain bike. It was in the 1990’s when these bikes finally reached a point where they were marketable.

In addition to the frame and suspension, there are other differences in mountain bike designs. One key area where bikes differ is the brakes. Mountain bikes either have some form of caliper brakes, which are the kind of brakes typically associated with bikes. This kind of brake squeezes the rims to slow and stop the bike. The other type of brake is the drum brake. Drum brakes on bikes are similar to the braking system on automobiles. Drum brakes are more expensive than caliper brakes but they’re also easier to maintain. Mountain bike braking systems have even been made which utilize hydraulic power.

Another area where you have some choice in mountain bike design is tire size. Mountain bike tires typically range in size from 24″ to 29″. Smaller tires are used when greater maneuverability is required as in stunt-riding and jumping. Larger tires are used when speed is the key.

As with any other important purchase, do your homework before buying a new mountain bike. Think about your needs and your budget. Mountain biking is a terrific past-time. It’s a fun way to get some fresh air, enjoy the outdoors, and improve your health.

Mountain bike also called as mountain bicycle is made in particular for mountain biking, on dirt trails and many other rough surfaces. When compared to road bicycles they are better and rugged enough for such unfriendly and unsafe terrain.

These bikes have broad, knobbier tires for more grip and absorption of shock. In modern bikes, suspension for front wheel has become the custom while suspension for the full front and rear is becoming more and more general.

In few mountain bikes, the handlebars are fixed with bar ends, but riser handlebars which are made such that they oppose to a flat straight handlebar are becoming increasingly popular because a very few riders use bars with their ends extended. These bikes usually have 26 inches or 559 mm wheels, but after year 2002 many bikes are available in the markets, which have 29 inches or 622 mm wheels.

This is the diameter universally used for other normal road bikes which is also known as a 700c. However, the giant mountain bikes have a diameter much greater than the normal 622 mm and have ranges starting from 952 mm. There are many kinds of giant mountain bikes with many types of wheels.

The giant mountain bikes have wheels that have a bigger diameter. Unlike normal mountain bikes these bikes are more difficult to ride. The bigger wheels make it more difficult to control. These types of mountain bikes are mainly used for giant mountain bike challenges like the ones held in Australia. The race held in Australia using giant mountain bikes is well known.

The broader wheels make the climb easier and make ascending more steady. These wheels are specially designed for mountain biking. A beginner could find it extremely difficult to ride a giant mountain bike as they are not like normal ones. Though it is very exciting to ride a giant mountain bikes it is not recommended to ride them in unsafe conditions without enough practice.

These wheel configurations make these bikes perfect for mountain biking. It would be very unsafe to use the normal road bikes on such terrains. These bikes are more rugged and resilient and are designed by a team of internal experts in order to ensure safety. They are always tested to provide the latest cutting edge designed and quality that only increases as time passes

The advantages of using a giant mountain bike are;

They are very light in weight, they provide better climbing and acceleration, they are laterally stiff, they give us a submissive ride and absorb vibrations and most important of all they are drop-dead gorgeous.

There are many types of giant mountain bikes available in the market

They come in many colors like satin grey, vivid pink, black, blue with white spokes, grey, vivid purple, satin blue, hazy red, sky blue, yellow, orange, green etc.

With so much comfort, safety and range mountain bike is the best thing to have for a ride. These bikes are for people who are passionate about giant wheels and mountain biking.

Regular bikes compared to mountain bikes may have a smoother ride and are slower and heavier but are great for riding on the street. You can find information about mountain biking online or in magazines; they are geared toward beginners or professionals. Mountain biking is not really thought of as exercising but it is a great way to burn many calories.

If your interested are off-road you will need bike that can handle the terrain so you will need some big treads and a good suspension to handle the bumps and holes so get a good mountain bike, if you are just riding for fun then a regular bike will do. There are so many different styles of mountain bikes so when you are looking to purchase one make sure it fits the terrain you will be taking it on and make sure it fits your riding style. If you are going to be rough on your bike and plan on going through gravel, dirt and jumping off hills you definitely need a mountain bike.

The chassis on a mountain bike is sometimes referred to as the skeleton, this is a term that refers to the fork, frame and suspension and is looked at as one unit. Mountain bikes are equipped with knobby tires, large number of gears and handle bars that are wider; they also include shocks and a much stronger suspension. You can choose from many different suspensions on your bike, make sure the suspension you choose is going to fit the type of cycling you intend for it. These used to be the most common kind of mountain bike but they are rapidly being replaced by the more comfortable models which feature some sort of suspension system. They have had front suspension on bikes for a while now; the rear suspensions have just come into the market place, it took longer because of all of the design complexities.

Of course, there are many other things to consider when purchasing a mountain bike, but for the beginner, it’s best to just narrow it down to how much you want to spend and what kind of suspension you’re going to want.

If you want to ride your mountain bikes look for trails that are suited for mountain bikes. If you don’t have any trails or jumps, you can build them.

When you first try the toe clip style of pedal you might want to spend some time getting use to it, it will take some practice. Getting a feel for your pedals while first sitting on your bike, keep one foot on the ground and practice moving your foot away from the pedal.

If you have clip less foot pedals or toe clips, you will want to practice this quite a bit. Turn your bike upside down, move the pedals and shift gears. The pedals can also use a regular application of lubricant.

The purchase of your helmet should be at least as important as buying your bike. About 90 percent of the people riding can reduce head trauma just by wearing a helmet. Cost shouldn’t be a factor as a good helmet can be acquired for around $25-$45.

Where can I get some mountain biking shoes?

mountain bike gear Where can I get some mountain biking shoes?
What are some good sites online to shop for mountain biking shoes? Both of the local bike stores near my house have an extremely limited selection of shoes (like three pair each). Performance and Nashbar seem to have a good selection, but never the right sizes. What I’m looking for is a shoe (SPD) that you can get off the bike and walk around easily. I’m not looking for the type of shoe that looks like a road shoe with a little tread. Any help would be appreciated.

Mountain bikes which are also called mountain bicycle (MTB, ATB that is All Terrain Bicycle) is designed in particular for mountain biking, on dirt trails and many other unpaved surfaces. When compared to road bicycles they are better and rugged enough for such unfriendly terrain.

As a beginner it could be very confusing for one to just stroll into a bike shop to buy their very first mountain bike. And what is more confusing is what all accessories one would need to start biking.

Mountain bike accessories and other mountain bike products one would want are available in plenty. A shopkeeper will be looking for a profit and would sell everything he can, but what beginners and customers with a budget need is a bike that has the proper accessories to make the ride safe and pleasant.

The advantages of using mountain bikes are;

They are very light in weight, they provide better climbing and acceleration, they are laterally stiff, they give us a submissive ride and absorb vibrations and most important of all they are drop-dead gorgeous.

There are many varieties and types of mountain bikes which can be seen in the market. Some important or popular varieties of mountain bikes are:

Barracuda: they are designed exceptionally well and are very suitable.

Haro : they provide more comfort and style

Giant mountain bikes: these have giant wheels designed for various conditions

Rocky mountain bikes

K2 mountain bikes etc

They come in many colours like satin grey, vivid pink, black, blue with white spokes, grey, vivid purple, satin blue, hazy red, sky blue, yellow, orange, green etc.

With so much comfort, safety and range mountain bikes are the best thing to have for a ride. So why would you want to buy anything else!
