i have a specialized P1 A1 and it’s great. I do exactly what you’re saying…freeride around town and maybe hit some dirt trails every once in a while.
Here are a few things you should consider:
1. 29 inch wheels are not recommended for freerede (they are weaker). I ride on 26’s with Holly Roller tires which make the wheel look massive and let it take hard landings. Just keep your tire pressure high.
2. I have a single gear on mine and I’m so glad i didn’t get gears. Before this bike i never saw the advantage of single gear bikes, but now that’s all i want/need. It’s also way quieter when you land.
3. Test ride it
4. Look into Trial Bikes…you might like that kind of riding more.
5. You can buy a frame and build up, instead of paying for parts that you will later replace with better ones.
When it comes to the frame material, I’m not sure how much heavier the cro-mo is from the aluminum. My P1 is from 2005 when they all had the same aluminum frames, now the P3 is the only one that has aluminum.
I know that Kona makes very good hardtail and DS freerides, so i would look into that first.

You can’t use 29 for anything other than road cycling as they’re too big and too weak for anything else. You need a dirt jumping bike with 26″ wheels, they’re all very solid, I doubt you’ll break any compenents on any dirt jumper available until you progress and get good. Go to bike shops and test ride some bikes. Choose the one that feels comfortable for you. Some of the popular bikes are the specialized P series, norco and devinci district.
